Trier

Did I mention that we saw the house Karl Marx was born in?

S has clarified, and it wasn't the king of Ghana that we saw but a king of one of the major tribes of Ghana. Still cool though...

Vin chaud!

Yes! I think he's the Ashanti king... Probably the most important tribe and one of the most important personalities in West Africa !

Ashanties are one of the oldest African empires. They are well known for being a matriarcal society (one in which women have the real power). Their king is the exception, he is tought of being a semi-god.

Historically, the Ashanti people were tought of being one of the bravest tribes in Africa. Many people have heard about South Africa's Zulus, but the Ashantis really defeated the British colonial troops and resisted so well that they became very famous for it. It was the only African empire that resisted and didn't become a colony.

You're so lucky to have seen him! ;)

Just checked and he definitely is the Ashanti King, Otumfuo Osei Tutu.... Here's another picture: http://www.flickr.com/photos/gregersreimann/412292471/

He still sits on their sacred golden stool, which has been given to them by their gods and symbolises the unity of their nation.

A lot of information by and about the Ashanti people can be found at: http://www.manhyiaarchives.org/page.php?id=4
